What's Up in the Cruising Fleet

The cruising season at DPYC is in action that started with a fun filled Tsunami Cruise last month in beautiful Newport Beach Harbor. If you missed this event, do not worry as we have exciting plans for 2017 and there is no better way to kick it into high gear than with a cruise to Catalina. That’s right, DPYC will be invading Avalon for the Cinco De Mayo cruise May 4-7. This will be a cruise everyone at the yacht club will be talking about so sign up today by emailing your confirmation with how many will be attending, your arrival and departure dates and your boat name and length. Additionally, you can sign up at the club upstairs on the cruise board.

The DPYC Cruise calendar is filled with some great destinations and some of the friendliest boaters on the West Coast. Speaking of friendly, May 26-28th we will be hosting boats finishing the around Catalina Island Race. For this event, we will be rafting up in the West End Basin of Dana Point Harbor to create open slips to host our guest and demonstrate the Corinthian Spirit of DPYC. Please sign up early so that we can help secure space for our guest and get prepared to have a memorable weekend in one of the most beautiful raft up locations that we are blessed to call home.

The above two events in May are just getting us warmed up as we have an additional 7 events scheduled that will include an Argosy Race to Oceanside, another Newport Beach Harbor raft up, several Dana Point Harbor raft ups, Catalina Island Isthmus cruise, an additional Avalon cruise and a San Diego Harbor week cruise.

There is a lot to be a part of and we hope that you will join us in creating great memories together.

The DPYC Cruising Life

The Cruising Committee presents another exciting year of organized cruising activities ranging from informal rendezvous, to Club cruises, to member expeditions. Members are advised to login to the member side of the website for details.

Dana Point Yacht Club started its cruising program over 40 years ago with a cruise to Emerald Bay, Catalina Island. That was 1973 when our first cruise to Emerald Cove on Catalina Island was arranged by DPYC member Charlie Smith with the Corsair Yacht Club.  A seminar was held prior to the cruise to instruct our members on how-to pick up the mooring wand, supplies that must be carried to the island, weather predictions, fishing opportunities and, of course, our entertainment. Over the years the cruising program has expanded and at present Dana Point Yacht Club has eleven cruises planned each year including Catalina Island, Oceanside, San Diego, Newport Beach, Los Angeles and the Southern California Channel Islands.

Cruising seminars on boating safety, local weather and wind, VHF and single sideband radio usage, anchoring, preventive maintenance, provisioning and passage making strategies are to be held in the clubs facilities in Dana Point Harbor to inform and educate both old and new members on needed seagoing skills.

Dana Point Yacht Club has a tradition of supporting family cruises with many activities for both adults and juniors including dingy races, fishing contests, scavenger hunts, nightly barbecues and more. The midsummer cruise to Emerald Bay is always a great pleaser with our younger members. In 2005 more than 35 juniors joined the adults and enjoyed the facilities of our friends, the Corsair Yacht Club, in Emerald Bay.

Rendezvous include informal gatherings in beautiful settings where members can come together by yacht, and sometimes by car, to enjoy cocktails, a great meal and the company of their fellow members. Some locations also offer a unique opportunity for a tour or cultural activity during the day.

Club Cruises are a longstanding Club tradition and offer the opportunity to bring members together in their own yachts or charter yachts to explore unique or traditional cruising grounds at Catalina Island, around Southern California and Mexico.

Expeditions offer members an unparalleled opportunity to visit far off destinations or destinations not usually accessible by private yachts.
